Video is the most important medium for online content. In developing the Perxeive app as a personalised education platform that has user generated multi-media content it was critical to provide users with tools to record and edit video content. In an earlier blog post I covered how we implemented user generated video recording and playback in Perxieve. I also posted a blog that gave users 10 simple tips to make their phone videos go viral on social media. So, the subject of video recording is close to my heart and helping users create great video content will help them get the most out of the Perxeive app.
In my life and career I have been fortunate to be involved in a number of different professional video recordings. These range from corporate videos in which I have appeared or which I have commissioned and been deeply involved in to television advertising recordings I have witnessed first hand in for businesses for which I have worked. This has given me not only personal experience but also the opportunity to discuss in depth with video professionals how they do what they do. I also have a personal passion for movies and as a member of the British Film Institute I have been able to listen to many of the film industries leading people discuss their craft.
In this short series of articles I attempt to bring all this together as a guide for those who are interested in video recording. In the first part we covered pre-production tips for successful video recording. In the second post we discussed setting up your equipment for optimal video quality. In part three we got into the detail of recording techniques for engaging videos. In this fourth and final part we discuss post-production essentials for polished videos.
In this section, we'll dive into the fundamental aspects of video editing, providing you with a solid foundation to take your skills to the next level.
Effective workflow management is essential to producing exceptional videos. It enables you to streamline your editing process, saving valuable time and reducing stress. To achieve this, establish a consistent workflow that works for you. Here are some key takeaways:
By implementing these workflow management strategies, you'll be able to focus on the creative aspects of video editing, rather than getting bogged down in tedious administrative tasks.
As a video creator, you know that capturing your audience's attention is crucial to conveying your message effectively. But did you know that visual storytelling can make all the difference? It's not just about showcasing beautiful visuals; it's about crafting a narrative that resonates with your viewers on an emotional level.
A well-structured narrative is essential to keeping your audience engaged. To achieve this, I recommend breaking down your video into three distinct acts: setup, confrontation, and resolution. This classic storytelling approach will help you create a clear beginning, middle, and end, making it easier for your viewers to follow along.
By incorporating this narrative structure into your visual workflow, you'll be able to weave a captivating story that resonates with your audience.
As videographers, we know that capturing high-quality footage is only half the battle. The real magic happens in post-production, where we get to enhance the visual aesthetics of our video recordings. One crucial aspect of this process is color grading and correction. In this section, I'll guide you through the essential techniques to master these skills, ensuring your videos captivate and engage your audience like never before.
Color theory forms the foundation of effective color grading and correction. It's vital to comprehend how different colors interact with each other, as well as their emotional connotations. For instance, warm tones can evoke feelings of comfort and energy, while cool tones can convey a sense of calmness or professionalism. By applying this knowledge, you can deliberately craft the mood and atmosphere of your video content. When color grading, ask yourself: What emotions do I want to evoke in my viewers? How can I use color to reinforce my narrative?
Even with meticulous planning, issues like exposure and white balance errors can arise during filming. The good news is that these problems can be rectified in post-production using color correction techniques. For example:
To achieve a visually stunning and consistent look across different shots, it's essential to utilize LUTs (Lookup Tables). These preset values enable you to apply a specific color grade to your footage, ensuring continuity throughout your video. You can create custom LUTs or use pre-built ones available in popular editing software. When working with multiple cameras or lighting setups, LUTs prove particularly valuable in maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
Color grading is one of the most impactful post production processes. Spending time to understand the theory and concepts is an investment that will help you become a better film creator. For more detail see the execellent Wikipedia article of color grading which provides a few examples including the one below.
By mastering the art of color grading and correction, you'll unlock the full potential of your video recordings, captivating your audience with visually stunning footage that resonates on an emotional level.

Ambiance, on the other hand, is all about creating an immersive atmosphere that draws the viewer into your world. Think of it as the auditory manifestation of setting the scene. Foley sounds, which are often used in film and television production, involve recreating everyday sounds to create a more realistic audio environment. By incorporating these elements thoughtfully, you can craft soundscapes that transport your audience to new and exciting realms.
Taking your video editing skills to the next level requires mastering advanced techniques that can elevate your videos from good to great. In this section, we'll dive into some expert-level editing techniques that will help you create high-quality, engaging videos that captivate your audience.

Another key aspect of advanced editing is speed ramping, which involves adjusting the playback speed of your footage to create dramatic effects or emphasize specific moments. By combining speed ramping with transitions, you can add an extra layer of polish to your videos, making them more engaging and dynamic. Furthermore, refining pacing is critical to keeping your audience engaged – by controlling the rhythm and flow of your video, you can build tension, create suspense, or convey complex information in a clear, concise manner.
Finally, incorporating motion graphics into your videos can add an extra layer of sophistication and visual appeal.
